Africa’s Top Gold Producer Just Changed Its Rules. We Know Them.
Ghana remains Africa’s leading gold exporter, producing over 3.7 million ounces annually. But 2025 marked a significant turning point. The Ghana Gold Board Act 2025 (Act 1140) established a centralised authority — the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) — as the sole licensing body for gold trading and export. All licences previously issued by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) were revoked as of 30 April 2025.
Simultaneously, new local ownership and content requirements came into force in January 2025, with a December 2026 compliance deadline. Non-compliance can result in operational restrictions, financial penalties, and licence revocation.
This is a high-stakes regulatory environment. Getting it wrong is expensive. Getting it right is competitive advantage. Akoben Advisory’s regulatory team has mapped every change in this evolving framework and helps clients move quickly into compliance — or get ahead of competitors who are still catching up.
